3D MODELING
A fun side project to fill some free time. Models were created in 3dsMax and may not be correctly sized as they were based on my personal memory and judgement based on the relationships between the objects.
This anatomical poster visualizes the branches of the external carotid artery.
A preliminary 3D base was created from a 2D image stack using Materialise Mimics. The model then went through extensive clean-up. Lighting and materials were done in Keyshot, with final composition in Photoshop and InDesign.
“Epigenetic Clockwork.” The chromatin-regulatory network is depicted as a system of gears that represent nucleosomes, connected by DNA, with gauges representing functional outputs such as gene expression.
This image was chosen as the cover for the Nature Genetics Volume 52 Issue 12 published in December 2020.
A life sciences poster displaying the life cycle of Stony Corals.
All 3D assets were sculpted using ZBrush and exported to Keyshot for rendering. Render passes were composited in Photoshop, and labels added in Illustrator.
The main assets in this poster were created using Autodesk Mudbox. Supplemental environment assets and layout were done in 3dsMax with compositing in Photoshop and final layout and illustrations done in Illustrator.
A 3D model of an otoscope that was created for an animation as part of a group project. The purpose was to showcase showcase a medical device via an 'exploded view' but also to create a memorable and unexpected product advertisement of a doctor's common tool. My role for the project was modeler and animator. Without having access to an otoscope in person, the modeling was based heavily on measurements that were available and reference images. Modeling and animation was done in 3dsMax.
A short clip of the animation can be seen in my demo reel on the Animation page.
This image was designed for use by leukemia researchers for their presentations and displays the increased numbers of white blood cells as would be seen in leukemic patients.
All assets, materials, lighting, and rendering were done in 3ds Max with final compositing in Photoshop.
These assets were created from scratch in 3dsMax for an animation detailing the effects of toxoplasmosis. A short clip of the animation can be seen in my demo reel on the Animation page.
These assets were created based on the PDB data for the HIV virus, along with other elements that were created in 3dsMax.
This chromatin fiber was created in 3dsMax for an animation. The model uses a relatively simple but custom base shape in combination with the VRayFur modifier to get the deeply textured effect. The end that is curling/condensing uses a helix spline, with the same VRayFur applied. A short clip of the animation can be seen in my demo reel on the Animation page.
2D/3D BLEND - EDITORIAL
Online media & presentation MATERIALS
Image showing progression from chromosome -> DNA -> mRNA -> protein for use as presentation material.
An opener for a presentation showing the balancing act of two protein complexes: POLYCOMB and COMPASS.
An image for a presentation slide, this blend of 2D and 3D was intended to showcase the differing effects on transcription of adding a methyl or acetyl group to histone H3.
A 2D/3D blend figure for publication showing the effect of pausing of RNA Pol II based on presence or absence of the NELF protein complex.
